Bontact was established in 2014 and is still a small startup. In fact, the team just graduated from the Microsoft Accelerator program this summer.

They built Bontact because they saw that most e-commerce sites were built like a catalog instead of as a sales tool. And to have a sales tool, you need a contact channel between the visitor and the business that works quickly, so that visitors can make their buying decision on the spot.

Nice Chat

Nice Chat is one of the newest live chat services to hit the market. It was released earlier this year in 2014, and has become a great option for webmasters looking to try out live chat software. As an avid explorer of all things live chat, I thought I would give this one a try.

After making a free account you go through a step-by-step process to choose settings and integrate the service with your website. It’s set-up so that you don’t need to have any programming experience to integrate Nice Chat with your site and customize it to match the look of your brand.

Nice Chat is similar to Olark and Live Chat Inc in that there’s a small widget that you add to your site for customers to trigger a chat session.

This seems to be the most popular format for the live chat experience used these days. Customers can always find the live chat widget, and rather than a pop-up opening in another window for the chat, the widget simply expands right in the same window.

Rather than needing to download software, you log-in and handle chat requests right in an Internet browser.

From the browser, agents see how long a customer has been waiting for help, so it’s easy to decide whom to chat with first.

When chatting with someone, agents can view detailed information about the customer such as the page that they are currently on, where they are located, what type of computer system they are using, and more.

You can store answers to common questions into something called “Fast Messages” which are basically message templates. The fast message feature and clean layout of Nice Chat makes it pretty easy to chat with multiple people at the same time and handle a high volume of requests.

SnapEngage is a unique live chat software company based in Boulder, Colorado.  The company has grown by leaps and bounds since launching in 2009, and has attracted a number of high-profile clients.

What sets Snap Engage apart is the ability to easily set up automated proactive chats.  I experienced this first-hand when I went to their site to research their features.  After a few minutes, I was greeted by Erica (complete with a smiling picture), who went on to give me a nice little tour of the product.

She explained how the proactive chat actively engages customers at surprisingly high rates.  It worked for me!  She was able to redirect my browser to certain pages on their site, to access the right information.  I can imagine for someone in a sales role, it could be a pretty powerful tool in closing the deal.

As a visitor, I liked how I was able to move the chat window around within my browser tab and didn’t have to actively seek out help either.  I’m always the guy that spends 20 minutes in Home Depot wandering around trying to find someone who works there, so the fact they came to me left a good impression.

Snap Engage is a hosted solution, meaning it can be installed instantly by simply pasting some code into your site.  It also allows for integration with your existing CRM and helpdesk systems, and you can even chat with customers from your favorite IM client like Gtalk.

The live chat software also includes some pretty robust reporting, real-time visitor monitoring, and the ability to customize the look and feel of the chat widget.  If you’re on the go, you can even respond to customers from your smartphone.

A Basic plan for one agent is $19 a month, and prices go up from there depending on your needs.  The most popular plan is the Business plan at $49 a month, which allows for 4 agents, widget customization, and unlimited chats.  There are no set-up fees and you can earn a 10% discount by pre-paying for a year in advance.

SnapEngage does offer one plan that is completely free, but limits you to 30 chats per month.  For slightly higher volume, the Startup plan is only $9 a month and allows up to 100 chats.  Both of these plans include a license for just one agent.

All Snap Engage plans are available with a 15-day free trial so you can fully test out the service.  But as you can probably anticipate, it won’t take a large improvement in conversion rate to generate a positive ROI on your live chat investment.

LiveChat Inc

LiveChat Inc is a slick entry into the live chat software field with a clean and sleek interface.  The technology behind the Poland-based company is essentially the same as many of the other live chat providers, but LiveChat is focused on keeping things simple and easy to use.

I was surprised to learn LiveChat has been in business since 2002, since their interface and website look very modern.

As far as features go, the platform isn’t as robust as some of the other offerings but still has some nice touches.  For example the live chat is fully functional as you would expect, and you can also view what keywords the visitor is searching for to get better insight into how to serve them.

Your website visitors can also login via Facebook, giving you a more personal touch – if not a bit creepy.  For people who prefer not to use Facebook, they can chat after a short survey.  I understand the idea is to gain as much information as you can about your site visitors, but it does create another barrier to communication, even if it’s a small one.

LiveChat Inc includes support for screen sharing via its integration with LogMeIn.  The platform can also be added to your Facebook fan page, so you can better interact with customers who might not even be on your website.

Many other live chat software choices allow you to see when your customer is typing, but LiveChat Inc allows you to see what they’re typing.  Again, maybe a little creepy but can definitely lead to faster responses and better service for slow and hesitant typers.

The software comes in a variety of color schemes to match your website and the built-in reporting suite helps you maximize conversions and profit.

In addition, their chat window is now operational on mobile devices, a handy feature as more and more visitors go mobile.

Pricing for LiveChat Inc starts at $16 a month for a Starter plan with one operator, and goes up to $149 per seat per month for the large enterprise clients.

eAssistance Pro

eAssistance Pro is a live chat solution from Lepide, a leading software development and IT management firm in India. The company has been in business since 2005, and launched the eAssistance live chat product into their growing portfolio in 2012.

eassistance pro reviewThe software is a full-featured solution with all the bells and whistles you’d expect, including proactive chat, real-time visitor monitoring and analytics, spellcheck and translation, offline messaging, mobile support, chat transcripts, and canned responses to save time.

eAssistance Pro also offers a variety of live chat invitation buttons to better match the look and feel of your website. For a more personal touch, you can upload a picture of each agent so customers can see who they’re chatting with.

One particularly useful feature is called “co-browsing” where the agent can expertly guide the visitor’s screen to answer questions and make more sales.

Like most others on the market the eAssistance software is a hosted solution, meaning you just need to install a small script on your site and the live chat will appear to users. It can be installed on any site regardless of the programming language used, and can even be used in eBay Stores.

There is a downloadable “operator console” for live chat agents to use and manage their interactions with visitors.

I found their feature comparison table pretty useful and an unusual display of transparency. It pits their offering against other live chat providers to highlight the advantages and disadvantages of each.

Clocking in at over 6 minutes, that’s one of the longest explainer videos I’ve seen!

Pricing for eAssistance Pro starts at $7 per month per operator or $79 for the year. With additional discounts for multiple users and longer lengths of service, you can actually get the software for just $2.86 per agent per month with the 12-month Enterprise plan (for up to 10 agents).

Aside from pricing and the number of users allowed, there are no material differences between the plan levels. Features are the same for the Basic, Standard, Professional, and Enterprise editions.

The company offers a 30 day free trial, which is among the most generous in the industry. And if after you sign up and pay you are dissatisfied for any reason, they have a 30-day money back guarantee.

When I spoke with Deepak from eAssistance Pro, he explained that many customers prefer the real-time nature of live chat compared with emailing questions and having to wait for a response.

Overall, the design elements and customer experience may not be as slick as some of the more modern-looking entries, but eAssistance Pro live chat is packed with features at a very competitive price point.

ClickDesk is a very well-regarded live chat software provider. The company was born in 2010 in Silicon Valley and has grown by leaps and bounds, amassing some impressive positive press along the way.

The founders decided that many of the existing live chat solutions were outdated in that they weren’t built for the cloud, they weren’t social, and they didn’t play well with others.

ClickDesk addressed those issues and more in building out their live chat platform.

First, the live chat is a modern hosted solution. It takes just minutes to set up an account and install the script on your site. The look and feel are pretty slick and non-intrusive.

When you set up your user account, you can link it to gmail / Google Apps, or Skype. That way you can chat in an environment that’s already familiar to you and you don’t have to learn a new interface.

The ClickDesk software also supports integrated voice over IP calling, so customers can call you directly from their computer if they prefer that over chat, or if they have questions that are better explained over the phone.

And on the social side, you can integrate your Facebook and Twitter links right into the chat utility.

ClickDesk is also available as a free WordPress plugin, if you prefer that over installing the script on your own.

Like other live chat platforms, ClickDesk’s web interface provides real-time analytics data on your site visitors.  The company also recently released a full-blown help desk software package that is included in each pricing tier at no extra charge.

A limited edition free version is available, and includes live chat, voice calls, and the help desk. The downside is it is limited to just 30 chat sessions per month and can only support one agent.

Beyond that, a $9.99 “Lite” plan provides unlimited chats, a customizable chat widget, and SSL support (perfect for ecommerce stores).

However, most customers end up opting for the $14.99, full-featured “Pro” plan, which includes unrestricted access to ClickDesk’s robust back-end controls and can be installed on multiple domains. In addition, the Pro version can be white labeled, which means customers won’t see the ClickDesk name or link promoted anywhere on your site.

The prices for the paid plans above are quoted on a per-agent basis, based on annual billing. Month-to-month subscriptions are available at slightly higher rates.

The company doesn’t have a free trial beyond the basic free plan itself, but they do have a 30 day money back guarantee if you don’t end up liking it for whatever reason.

Provide Support

Provide Support is a veteran of the live chat software industry. The New York-based company has been around since 2003, and specializes in global integration under one platform. By that I mean their software is available in a plethora of languages so you can interact with customers from around the world.

Provide Support live chat includes all the features you’ve come to expect, including proactive chat invitations, real-time visitor monitoring, spellcheck, chat transcripts, and more.  One thing that’s nice about Provide Support is that all the features are available in every license you order, in contrast to some other software companies that hold back the good stuff for the higher-paying clients.

For a solo operator, Provide Support is $15 a month.  They offer a significant discount for annual billing, which brings the price down to $99 for the full year.  For a single license, the rate is kind of middle of the road.  The real savings come into play when you’re looking at software for a team of live chat agents.  The price for a team of 10 agents is only $396 for the year, which is very competitive.

A 10-day free trial is available on all plans.

From the customer perspective, Provide Support live chat appears to be a little old fashioned. When I tested it out on another site, the chat window opened a new browser window vs. in overlay like most of the modern solutions.  Plus, there weren’t any notifications so I couldn’t tell when the operator had replied.  To be fair, there was a chime button… but I clicked on it and nothing happened.

Mobile support, if included, is not mentioned.  However, if you can live with these features, the value for a large group is pretty strong.

Agents have the option to use the web-based chat interface or the desktop software.  On your website, the chat icon is customizable and can be made to change automatically to get the user’s attention.

OGGChat is a simple and flexible live chat platform from ICOA, Inc.  The Rhode Island-based company has been around since the mid-1990s and develops communications tools for businesses across many different technology platforms.

OGG Chat live chat software is known for its integration with other IM clients like Google Talk.  This can be valuable so you have a centralized location to handle all the chats on your computer.  And like other other services, OGG now supports mobile chat so you can interact with customers away from your office as well.

The software is installed via a simple code snippet, and is hosted in OGGChat’s cloud environment.  The look and feel of the chat windows, buttons and logos are fully customizable to match the design of your site.  It also integrates easily into websites built on the Drupal and Shopify platforms, among others.

OGGChat live chat software allows you to monitor visitors to your site in real-time, and even see where they are geographically located.  You can send out proactive chat invitations and the system will store a transcript of your chats for reference and training later.

The platform is perhaps not as feature-rich as some of the other providers, but the price is right.

Pricing for OGG Chat starts at $9.95 per month for one operator.  This low-cost option is “private label” meaning you don’t have to show any OGG branding to your customers.  If that matters to you, it’s one of the most inexpensive plans to carry that option.

For 3 operators, the rate is just $19.95 per month, and includes other advanced features as well such as visitor monitoring and SSL security.  OGGChat has higher level plans for larger organizations too, and each plan includes a healthy discount for pre-paying annually vs. monthly. All OGG live chat plans come with a 14-day free trial.

Although the company hasn’t blogged or tweeted in six months at the time of this writing (usually a red flag), a live chat operator was online to answer my questions when I stopped by.

WhosOn is a live chat and visitor tracking software platform developed by Parker Software.  The company is headquartered in the UK and has been creating web software applications since 2003. Clients large and small use WhosOn to generate more sales and improve customer service.

WhosOn is unique in that you can buy the live chat software outright and run it on your own servers.  This can be preferable over the more common hosted solution for larger companies that want complete control and customization.

Both the installable version and the standard hosted version are feature-rich packages.  They allow you to track website visitors in real time and proactively engage with them with intelligent and automated chat invitations.

WhosOn also support Salesforce CRM integration, mobile chat, click-to-call-back, and even spell-check and translation tools.  A robust reporting platform lets you dive into your traffic and live chat data to study patterns and make incremental improvements.  The live chat also integrates with a help desk ticketing system to track customer issues that can’t be resolved in a single chat session.

The WhosOn Installable Edition starts at $640. It’s fully customizable and can accommodate entire teams of customer support agents.  However, additional user support does add to the price. The benefit is you have no recurring license fees; it’s just a one-time payment and the software can be installed on any number of websites you own.

The Hosted Edition starts at $39 per month for a single agent.  Additional operators are $25 per month.  There are some discounts available for switching to quarterly or annual billing, but these rates still make WhosOn a more expensive option than some of the other live chat software choices such as Zopim, Olark, or ZaZa chat.

Both WhosOn plans allow for a free trial period so you can test out a full-featured version of the software before committing to purchase.

Mioot is a live chat software company out of India.  The company has been around since 2003, but it’s hard to say how active they still are.  The copyright date on their website hasn’t been updated since 2010, they haven’t tweeted in over a year, and haven’t posted any new blog articles in over 6 months. (At the time of this writing.)

Mioot, which they insist on typing as “miOOt”, offers a hosted live chat solution similar to other providers like Zopim and Olark.

Among the features you can expect from Mioot are proactive and automated chat invitations, real-time visitor tracking with detailed geo-location stats, and pre- and post-chat survey tools.  Support reps can also push URLs to the visitors, meaning they can remotely direct their browser page to the desired screen.

The Mioot reporting suite includes data on point-of-entry referrals and exit pages, along with internal navigation analytics.  Managers can review chat transcripts which are automatically saved and view reports on the effectiveness of the chat operators.

Mioot is priced starting at $9 per month for a solo operator under the “Small Biz” package.  A more advanced feature set is available on the “Chat Pro” package, which starts at $23 a month.   Both plans are available with modest discounts for pre-purchasing a 6-month subscription.

At the time of this writing, there seems to be some disconnect on pricing — or at least a failure to update after a price hike. On the Pricing page, the basic service is $9 a month.  On the Features page, it’s quoted at $8.

The free trial period is 7 days, so you can test out the live chat software before committing to a purchase.

I visited during normal US business hours and found their own live chat operators offline, despite multiple promises of 24/7 support.  Beyond that, there was a typo in the offline message!  Not exactly the message I’d want to send to my site visitors!

Catch it?

All in all, Mioot is a decent entry into the low-priced live chat software field, but you’re probably better off going with a more up-to-date solution.

Comm100 is a full-service customer communications company based in Vancouver, British Columbia.  Founded in 2009, they offer forum software, email marketing management, help desk software and ticketing tools, and of course live chat.

I like how Comm100 harnesses social proof on their homepage with the little counter that now reads nearly 200,000 businesses chose us.  Safety in numbers right?

The live chat platform is full-featured offering that includes mobile support, intelligent chat invitations, and even a phone-free voice chat option.  The service is entirely cloud-based, meaning you don’t have to download anything locally or to your servers, and it installs instantly by pasting a few lines of code.

Comm100 allows you to customize the look and feel of the chat buttons and windows to match the aesthetics of your website.  Alternatively, there are several professionally designed templates built in.

If you’re worried about ROI, Comm100 offers a suite of reporting tools to track everything from customer engagement to agent efficiency and ultimately conversion rates and order values.

Pricing starts at $14 per month per operator, with significant discounts available for larger teams.  The Professional plan at $29 per month includes often-requested features like proactive chat invitations, voice chat, and mobile access.

At the top of the menu is the Enterprise plan, at $49 per operator per month.  This is the full white-label offering, complete with the detailed reporting suite, post-chat surveys, and premium support and agent coaching.

All plans integrate with the other Comm100 services and come with a no-obligation 15-day free trial.

At one point it appears the Comm100 live chat software was available as a free open-source solution, but I’m not finding any information on that.  Looks like they got wise and started charging!

ChatStat is a California-based live chat software company.  Founded in 2005, ChatStat set out to improve the web experience by making live interaction and responsive customer support easy and affordable.

Their live chat software includes the basic features you would expect, such as inbound chat, customizable buttons, geo-location, translation tools, and traffic monitoring.  It integrates with all your favorite instant messaging platforms.

One thing I thought was frustrating was how ChatStat doesn’t include all of these in the basic package, instead they upsell them as “features on demand.”  This tactic is one I haven’t seen from the other live chat companies, but on the positive side it lets you customize your monthly expense to only pay for the features you want.

In addition, ChatStat can be expanded to offer a host of advanced tools.  One of these is a call back option where customers leave you their number in an informal setting and you can call them back.  It ends up saving time and money over staffing a full 800-line.

The MovingGraph Analytics is a popular add-on.  It allows you to extrapolate or drill-down into the overload of analytics data your website collects on a daily basis.  Another option is the remote screen sharing and remote access control – perfect for tech support to really see the exact problem a customer may be looking at.

Pricing for ChatStat is $20 per month per operator, plus whatever “Features on Demand” you want to add on.  For example if you needed two operators and wanted to record a history of your chats ($10) and send automatic chat invitations to your visitors ($5), your total would be $55 a month.

It seems like more full-featured plans are available elsewhere for less and without the feeling of getting nickeled and dimed.

To get started with ChatStat, you have to download their desktop software, which I thought was weird.  Most other live chat companies are operating in the cloud (and indeed the actual chat software is hosted on their servers).  That means instead of just logging into a web interface, every agent is going to have to download the software onto their own workstation.

ChatStat offers a 30-day free trial if you’d like to take their service for a spin.  However, when I went to try it, I couldn’t get the desktop software to work.  You’re supposed to use it to create an account, but the “Create a ChatStat Account” link was unclickable for me, and everything else was grayed out.  Moving on.

The AliveChat software comes in three versions: Lite, Pro, and Pro+.  AliveChat Lite starts at $29.95 per month and includes licenses for 2 simultaneous operators and one administrator.  The Pro and Pro+ plans include additional features like the Visitor Recorder, robust reporting metrics, operator training and VIP support.  These packages are less expensive than some of the full-featured competitors like BoldChat and LivePerson.  Plus, if you pay for a full year in advance, you get one month free.
